Amidst the worsening global challenges of climate change, scarcity of resources, and environmental degradation, the urgency to adopt sustainable practices has never been more critical. The broader implications of environmental crises extend far beyond intra-federation conflicts, affecting geopolitical relations and global peace. In this scenario, the role of premier institutions of higher education to promote climate awareness and find actionable solutions holds paramount significance. Rector NUST Dr Muhammad Zahid Latif made these remarks during his maiden visit to NUST Sustainability Office.
He called for developing a robust and well-integrated framework towards developing NUST as a role model in sustainable practices, catering to every facet of its environmental footprint. Against the backdrop of ever-increasing stress on water resources, he emphasised the need to take proactive measures to ensure water quality and conservation to address the current and future requirements. By working out a comprehensive strategy, he maintained that the aim should be to not only meet the university’s own water needs but also offer viable solutions to looming water scarcity challenges at large.
The Rector also shared his vision for achieving net zero on campus by means of large-scale solarisation and other green initiatives, such as plantation drives, introduction of eco-friendly mobility on campus including use of QR-coded bicycles, etc. Terming NUST one of the best reservoirs of knowledge in the country, he encouraged participation of the faculty and researchers in conducting rigorous scrutiny of initiatives in line with the global sustainability standards. He also called for fostering a culture of environmental consciousness both within and outside of the university through awareness campaigns (such as walks) on climate challenges and stewardship.
Earlier, the Rector visited NUST Placement Office. Expressing his appreciation for NUST’s coveted standing among the world’s top 100 universities in Employer Reputation, he ascribed the accomplishment to the university’s vibrant knowledge ecosystem. Highlighting the importance of students’ holistic grooming, he laid emphasis on creating opportunities that invoke their latent talents and develop positive attributes making them responsible citizens and sound professionals. The Rector also called for building partnerships with leading global employers, enabling them to hire quality human resources from NUST, particularly social scientists well versed in the global and regional geopolitical dynamics.
